I have an 89 cherokee 4.0 great condition! Motor purrs like a kitten at 600 rpm
If u give it the least bit of gas it misses and backfires like a cannon! I know there's a lot of problems with this on here but noone has ever posted bnack and said yea that fixed it! I have done everything imaginable sensor wise and fuel wise and vacuum wise I'm at a loss!

Fuel air spark. It's one of the 3. Try the cap and rotor, or check to make sure the plug wires arent arcing to the block causing loss of spark. Could be a multitude of things.

I am going to follow these threads as well...
it happened to me this week end. car runs perfect at idle (maybe a little low), doesn;t overheat, actually doesn;t even reach 210...
Drove it for the first time this week end out of the driveway. everything was fine.... on the way back, it started having the same problem described by OP. I managed to limp back home by switching gear..... basically would go for a second in 3rd, the bog....shift to 4th then bog....go back to 2nd etc...

I let is cool down for a few hours and then it started fine and I could drive it again....
