I have an 89 Cherokee Laredo, 4wd, Auto with 4.0L 6. It idles at 1000 when I start and when at stops. After I have driven and stop, if I restart again the idle races up to 2000 or more and does not come back down until I have driven for a few minutes. If I let the engine set for 15 or 20 minutes it seems to start ok. I have replaced the Idle air control motor and the throttle position sensor. It is running rich also. I am confused at this point. Would greatly appreciate any tips I can get.

 

Man I am having the same issue with my 88 XJ.

 

Check the CPS with a multimeter. Should read 200 Ohms +/-75
