Black is usually ground on the wiring harness to the stereo

check this link out...

test the ground, and +12 Switched and then the ground and the +12 Constant connections against your ground on the radios wiring harness. (DC setting).

Then test the +12v Switched and the + 12v Constant against chassis ground using a multimeter and the DC setting.

Keep in mind that switched means that the ignition will need to be "on" to see voltage on that line.

This will tell you if your radio is getting power on both supplies of +12v

So if the +12v constant works against the harness ground, and the switched doesn't then your ignition switch wiring would be the culprit.

If both the +12v switched and the +12v constant don't work against the harness ground and the chassis ground works then your harness ground is disconnected. You can run your grounds to chassis ground (grounds are common on most well maintained electrical systems, that being said yes ground can float, but then you have a different issue which is that you need to clean up your grounds.)

Also the multimeter has a continuity setting that will beep and you can use this to test fuses as well sometimes they look OK but they are in fact blown.

Chassis ground means anywhere on the chassis, look for a bolt you can secure the ground to. Just follow the black ground wire to where its grounded.

Is it a stock radio or aftermarket. I had a similar problem with my stock 89 radio. The ground wire for it doesn't come from the plug. Its a spade like terminal next to where the plug goes into the radio.
