Yes. Bend back the tabs and take it apart and look inside. Also try rockauto.com for a much cheaper price if you can't fix it.

ok well i got the starter relay apart and it looks ok.

with the back off i hooked it back up and watched it while my wife cranked the engine. seemed to engage fine.

im getting 12v from ignition, 12v at sol. spade, ground seems ok but its only giving me 6.8v to the ballast wire.

at this im stumped...

also with key in the on position, at the fuel pump wire harness im only getting 6.8

Sound like a short?

Man I wish I had my diagrams on me.... I don't think the pump gets a full 12... I can't check it out for ya till about noon tomorrow. That's when ill be back with my jeep and working on it. I think you should have 12 coming from the relay to the resistor though. Damn I wish I had it in front of me....

Sound like your close check the fuel pump relay ,the socket, and the wires that feed it . Many a xj went to the junk yard with relay problems.

Not knowing (this), I would think it's a pretty sure bet the resistor should be getting 12 V. Can you see the surface of the contacts? If not them it's a wire or fuse connection lowering your voltage? AND, the relay wiring showed in Dukie's post was enlightening for me.

(Edit added)....Whoops! That wiring in that diagram is the starter relay.

Dose this thing try to run when you turn the key to start mode, try seeing if you are getting 12 volts at the pump when cranking the motor over

Ok when I turn my key to on I have no voltage at the spade terminals on the relay. When on there is 12v into the ballast and about 9 out. Damn it now I can't remember if it was 9 or 12 coming out of the relay.

ok, if you have 12V at the ballast resistor and 9V out then you're relay and ballast resistor is working ok. Work your way back to the fuel filter area, there should be a plug there that connects the fuel pump to the wiring harness, check your voltage there, if you have 9V, then you probably have a bad fuel pump, if you don't have 9V then you have a broken wire somewhere. Good luck!! Coach

"12v from ignition, 12v at sol. spade, ground seems ok but its only giving me 6.8v to the ballast wire".

Shouldn't he be getting 12 to the ballast? An 88? The contacts might be 23?

OH! I get it, nevermind.

So with 6.8 DEOR might want to clean those contacts?

thanks for checken that out for me....

probably is a good idea for me to go threw and clean all the contacts...

after the ballast risister, does the power go staraight to the pump?

having a hard time finding the wire digram that would shows that. im trying to get a picture of the sequince that everything is run, so that i can bypass things to eliminate problems. for example, can i just run a wire from the soliniode to the pump?

well i didnt get to mass with it today but im going to put in a few hours in the morning so well see what i get. Thanks guys, hopfully this thing will be on the road this weekend.

Yes it goes straight to the pump. The pump is designed to run 9v though. If anything try to run a wire hot from 12v to the bat side of the resistor... but first did you test the input and output on the resistor? Actually it has to be running. In the morning I will test the ballast to see how much resistance it has. Then you can check to see if its any good. Let's start there. If that doesn't work ill pm you my # and walk you through diagnostics.
