Thanks freegdr, I will check the starter solenoid. I noticed my fuel pump runs continuously when the key is in the 'ON' position, I"m not sure if that is normal, but it does turn off with the key in OFF.

sure you dont have a broke rack from the lock cyl. to the ignition switch. If it breaks you can sometimes start but will not be able to turn back to shut off.

kimseyracing -

im pretty sure its not the rack because i had the ignition switch completely disconnected and i was getting power like the key was in the "on" position.

Freegdr -
There are no wires coming from ign fuse in the box, and no extra wires from what i can tell. Also, replaced the starter solenoid today and still same problem.

I have bought all the stuff i need to wire 2 switches up, one to the battery and one to the fuel pump relay to shut the engine down. Its not worth the trouble to go through all the wiring in my opinion, for what i will be using it for, the switches will be fine.

thanks much for everyones help.

I have searched that (wording it 5 different ways lol) and most of what i get is something wrong with ign switch, they key rack broken, or the plug to the ignition switch is faulty.

since i have a new switch, key rack isnt broken, and ive tried 3 plugs from parts jeeps, nothing is helping.

Thats what is leading me to wires touching in the harness causing something to get power that shouldnt when you turn the key to the "off" position.

What is the 'key rack' you guys are referring to?

Any luck with yours so far sams88? Did you install a kill switch yet? I will have to go that route if I can't get this fixed soon...

I got the starter removed today, going to try swapping out the solenoid tomorrow in hopes that is the source of the problem. The starter looks pretty new but I suppose the solenoid could be defective. I checked the wiring going to the starter & no issues there...

Its going okay, i got the fuel cutoff switch in, and it works i can now shut the jeep off without lifting the hood. I added the switch on the red wire going to pin 87 on the fuel pump relay, so with the switch off, the engine cranks but wont start.

I've been workin alot so i dont have the battery kill switch in yet. I'm also trying to figure out how i can wire in an indicator light for each switch.

The only thing im worried about is when i do the battery, im hoping my 50amp switch wont blow, a friend of mine said it would be fine to use since im just breaking the ground wire from the battery. If anyone has any input on that it would be great.

Tomorrow i should have everything done and ill post an update on if it works or not or any problems.

WantACherokee - The key rack is what moves the rod that goes into the ignition switch. when you turn your key in the lock solenoid, it moves the rod which clicks the ignition switch into each position. its inside the steering column.

you should use the cut off that they use on race cars on the back it kills all power to the vechicle .what you doing with the switchs is stopping the current flow but there is still a potential of fire some thing is back feeding or burnt up causing this issue

I thought about using one like that, but i dont want it to be in the back of the vehicle. The whole point of this switch is so i dont have to get out of the vehicle and lift the hood to disconnect the battery.

Do you know if they make one of these to go inside of the vehicle?

I got both of my switches hooked up and both work properly. I can now shut off the engine from the inside of the vehicle! lol.

Now on to my next problem, my dash and tail lights are out, ive searched around on a couple different forums including this one, changed the headlight switch, the connections look good at the switch, the fuse is not blown, although i do have one headlight out and one blinker out in the rear.

I know the dash lights, tails, license plate light, and im sure a couple other things are linked together on the same circuit, but I dont know if the blinker/headlight have anything to do with the tails/dash lights. Im going to get a new bulb for both head and blinker here shortly. Since my fuse isnt popped i need to check and see if im getting power to the tails.

Can anyone help with which wire should have power and what it should be?

If my key doesn't turn back to acessory... probably a bad key rack then? Can the key rack be replaced separate of the whole steering column?
