If it has a V6 I wouldn't pay $700 for it unless it is in excellent condition otherwise. If it has the I6 4.0 and no major problems otherwise (rusted floor pannels, etc.) then $700 would be okay. The problem with buying a vehicle from a friend (or the co-worker of your girlfriend) is that you get worried about repercussions if they get offended during price negotiations. Find out what the JY price would be if the CWOYGF scrapped it. That will give you an idea of the ARBP (absolute rock bottom price.) It runs, it's driveable and has a good inspection sticker. $500-$600 would be okay in Texas, and it would be a good deal in Houston where prices run higher. Where are you at? Maybe prices run higher there. I see 90s XJ's in Houston going for $1200 in good shape because they are 4x4.

Ok, so the rub on the vehicle is that they put tow lights on, and it won't start. When they had the car towed the lights turned off and on going over bumps. This sounds like a bunk ground to me. Either way that should be a traceable problem. I have access to a car dolly, and the asking price is $500. It sounds like it has the tow package on it as well, based on conversation. The owner pulled some stuck people out of the snow here a few weeks ago. I am in western WA, where a clean 4x4 can go for some nice money...between hobbyists and unpredictable weather. Lol.
Hmmm. I think I am passing on this one. Got a bit more wrong with it than a bad ground. Broken muffler, rust in the usual areas, dented roof, oil around the enegine, busted tail light, fragged ground cable, door on one side needs adjustment, hard to tell exactly where the culprit is as far ad no power. It could be the ground, it could be ignition, it could be fuse, or some other faulty ground. Not worth the effort at $500 as it sits. If it was running, maybe...but without power, I have no idea what it is like inside the running gear. Also has like 215,000 on the odo, which is not unusual for the engine type...but damn...talk about understated issues.

yeah def not worth 500 in that shape and not being able to test drive. i only paid $240 for mine and it drove for a year before I started fixing it up!

Offer them the junkyard price, but be sure it has clean paper first.
No title = no deal. Hassling with the state over paperwork is definately a deal breaker. I think DMV screens new hires to obtain the most anally retentive human beings in the country.

Lol. I was thinking absolutely no more than $300 as my offer. But I am really looking for an inexpensive (sub-$1000) replacement for my current Jeep. I am thinking that I can compromise in one of two ways:
I can be OK with the 4.0 and 4x4 in a package with any trans.
OR
I would be ok with another 2.5L with a manual and 4x4. My little 2.5L AMC engine is tough, and has a lot of grunt in the lower gears for a 4cylinder. 1st gear is particularly granny from my perspective. Thoughts on this thought process?
