I've got an '88 Cherokee, 2wheel drive, 5spd M/T. In the past year or so, I've replaced ignition coil, TPS, IAC, FPR ALL BRAND NEW. TPS is for A/T, read here that doesn't matter. I've done Cruiser's cheap DIY fixes( ground refreshing & upgrading, C101 connector cleaning, throttle body maintenance), First thing I started with was the Sea Foam cleaning, immediate noticeable difference. My current problem started about 2 months ago, suddenly stalling when pulling up to stops after cruising speed, or stop and go traffic where I would quickly step on the brakes. Til' my battery died. Got a new one, situation improved, but didn't disappear altogether. Finally died on me about a month ago. Got home from work one morning, when I was leaving for work that evening, she just caught, sputtered and refused to start. Checked and noticed dizzy was soaked in oil. Got one from JY, put in O-ring( plus silicone, just to be sure). Replaced CPS( was on "to do list"). Fixed fuel leak in fuel rail, replaced fuel filter. Got new Champion Copper plugs. She starts! And dies when I rev her up!
I figure maybe I put the dizzy in wrong, so I recheck my manual, the forum, and my procedure, everything is right! By this time I've been at it for three weeks! Part of my vacation time went into it and I see no end, so I take it to a shop where I see a lot of Renix era Jeeps coming and going, giving them the same run down I've posted here. I feel it's the timing chain, or something with the timing, 'cause when I drove her to the shop( 5 minute drive) it was like driving a semi, engine was asking for gears, one after the other, went through the whole range in under 50 yards. Mechanic called me today and says I should get TPS for M/T just to eliminate the probability it might be that before heading for the timing chain.

Sorry I couldn't answer sooner, guys. I work nights, 12 hour shifts, yesterday's post was right before leaving for work. Without my DD, I have to take public transport and the 20 min. drive becomes a 2hour ride! To answer your comments: CPT, I've also wondered what the reasoning behind the pricing was, but if it works and it's versatile, Fine!
Jeff, I'll see if I can do that a little later, after catching some ZZZ's when I visit my mechanic, although I did clean the HELL out of that connector and added plenty of dielectric grease...
Cruiser, I replaced most of the vacuum hoses and tubing, but I'll still check that out. Glad to have your help, by the way.
I searched the forum yesterday and I came upon something you mentioned about the engine dying if that hose was disconnected from the MAP sensor. I've done that a few times, but I've never let the engine die, so I don't know if that could be the problem?
Anyway, today's plan is to instruct the mechanic to go ahead and access the timing gears and chain, see what shape they're in. Hopefully I just need the chain! The way I figure, that's a more likely possibility than the TPS. I'll keep you all posted on any progress, gotta get some sleep!
