88 cherokee lerado
Hello everyone. newish to this forum. have been reading for a long time but haven't actually posted much. if at all? i bought a cherokee lerado 88 i believe. i was just wondering if it has a vacume locker in the front? i have an option for a all time awd option and i figured maybe if it had that then it had a locker. i bought a lockright for the front and rear but after i purchased the lockright i noticed that it says not for vehicles with all time all wheel drive option. does this really affect me or only affect the use of the all time?
oh and i have tried searching. maybe im typing something wrong.

without any research on my end... i think you have the 231 transfer case. it, unlike the 242 has only one 4wd option: part time. essentailly this is only to be used on surfaces where all 4 wheels can slip. it is still an open diff. but i think that w/the part time you do have constant torque to the front drive shaft. the 242 has a full time option where the torque is only applied when there is slip. it allows you to turn lock to lock on dry pavement w/o the wheel bind youd get with the 231's part time. so i hope this is the answer you were lookin for
as it was explained to me- with your ride in 4wd you now (due to those damn open diff's) have a true 2wd rig. when you install a (rear) locker you now have true 3wd cause the rear is gonna turn both, but the front is still open. literally just about 15min. ago i was high centered and cursing my lack of lockers... or at LEAST a rear locker....
i have 2 wheel option then 4 high, then 4 time all wheel drive, then 4 low. that's how it is on the lever. but it does always say part time
does this mean the locker won't work or will the locker work?
OH and look for my build thread im gonna start tomorrow

Its not a locker its a 2pc shaft, when engaged in 4wd, the vaccum acuator slides a collar over to join them togther. With an open diff power is transfered to the path of least resistance (no traction), this disconnects the axle from turning.

If you have the "fulltime" option on your bezel you have the 242.
The opinions on a 242 and a front lunchbox locker differ, i personally ran that combo for years. It CAN tend to want to plow forward and not want to turn in snow etc in fulltime, which makes onroad use sketchy.

i won't be driving in 4wd on road i have 4 vehicles i can drive. basically i just want to make sure i can out mud or out trail my friends with this. i just didn't know if the locker would work with the vac lock.
