Default 87' Cherokee Sport, What do I need to know?

First, I am a new member do hi to all. Now to business, I have a 87' XJ Sport and don't know much about it. I am wondering what kind of axles it has, I have heard a couple different things, also what kind of transfer case, and transmission? Another thing I took it out yesterday and as i was trail riding and playing in some mud holes I got pretty deep in some water and my 4 wheel drive did not work when I tried engaging it. There has never been a time where it obviously failed and there is no noise coming from it. I put it in 4H or 4L and the 4wheel drive light does not come on and it does not engage. Anyone have some info and ideas for me? I know its a lot to ask for a first post but any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Welcome to the forum!

For axles you have a HP Dana 30 in the front. In the rear you either have a Dana 35 or Dana 44, the 44 being the better of the two.

As for the lack of 4wd, check the vacuum hoses under the truck going to the front diff.

Thanks, for the info. How can I tell the difference between a 35 and a 44? I have been checking vacuum lines and found one disconnected reconected it but 4x4 still did not work I think there may be some mud in the lines.

I hve heard of an after market set up that eliminates the vacuum set up and makes it electronic. Any thoughts on it? Thanks for those diagrams as well. what i found disconnected was the vac. harness from the shift motor.
