I have a 87 cherokee pioneer (4 cylinder, 5 speed manual). My problem is that my 4 high is not working. I bought the jeep this year in april and 4 high and 4 low worked just fine. A month or so ago I helped a friend drop the tranny and changed the clutch plate. I did not try out the 4 wheel drive after putting the tranny back in but I have had no problems. In fact it runs great and no problems shifting. I went to use the 4 wheel drive last night and pulled the lever up. the lever is loose and does not engage. 4 low works fine and i can feel it engage. Help!! what are my possible issues here?

 

could just be the linkage is out of adjustment after you pulled the tranny

 

That's what it sounds like to me, too.
