'87 AC System
Let me see if I can get an answer on this.
Girlfriend has an 87 Cherokee. The original engine seized because of a catastrophic oil leak. Unfortunately it happened 2 weeks after the "cash for clunkers" so getting an older engine was out of the question. After a couple weeks of searching we obtained a 95 I6 with very low miles. After some converting it was in and has been running perfectly since.
Now that were toward the end of summer she wants her AC working. I tried to figure out if it was R-12 or R-134a with no avail. The tag on the compressor is too far faded to read. Which brings us to problem one. What should I look for (as far as previous retrofitting) to see if it is fact R-12 or R134a?
While looking for the refrigerant type I went ahead and hooked up my manifold low pressure side and found 0 psi (go figure). I was then going to proceed to pull a vacuum on the system when I found the connector on the high side of the compressor was smaller then the low side. I haven't put my caliper on it but I'm guessing its 3/8ths. My gauge manifold has r-134a connectors on it which brings me to my next question. Is this a sign of retrofitting or am I just missing something?
I don't have too much experience with AC systems seeing that my 88 doesn't have an ac system other then the compressor.
