Default '85 2.5l engine knock

I have a '85 cherokee that was given to me and just replaced the power steering pump and valve cover gasket and now I have a knock coming from the engine. kinda sounds like a diesel engine. engine idles perfect except for the knock. rev engine a lil bit and noise goes away. I' m new to this jeep thing so any ideas would be greatly appreicated. thanks jack

4 cly. and inline 6 cyl. jeep engines all have timing gear/chain noise. I couldn't tell you for sure without hearing it myself but if it's loud at the front of the engine then more than likely it's a streched chain.

Is the timing chain difficult to change? It looks like it is to the left kinda under the alternator?

TIming chain would be center, behind a cover that is behind the harmonic balancer (large circular piece in the front of the engine)

ok, I appreciate the input. are there any other things that cold be causing this noise that might be easier to check and rule out as the problem or is the timing chain the most likely cause of this noise? when they go bad, they just go without warning. like I said all I did was replace ps pump and next thing I know it sounds like a diesel. the truck has 191k miles on it.

go to the parts store and get an automotive stethascope (dont know spelling) So you can pin point the noise, Thats what I did on my yota this last year and found the timing guides were toast
