Default 84 Cherokee 2.8 L V6

I have an original 84 Cherokee with the 2.8 V6 and 5 speed manual transmission. Would like to overhaul it for my son. Are there any other engines with more power that would mate up to the 5 speed manual tranny.

If if not is there a newer version of the 2.8 L that might provide more power. Original engine runs great with 174,000 but has low compression.

Thanks for any advise.

The 3.1L , 3.4L And 3.8L are all the same block and I think I was reading that the 3800 from a camaro or firebird will work but the 3800 is a fuel injection only . On the other engines your intake should fit

Sorry to threadjack, but I went through that link and saw the dude paid $100 for a running 2.8 ... and I just thought, "Wait.... you can buy a running XJ in OK shape for $100 bucks in the States? What the hell am I still doing in Canada?!" :P

Yes, the small 60° V6 Chevy engines bolt right up. You would be better off getting the wiring and computer for the fuel injection anyway. Getting hard to get parts for those carburetors anyway.
