8.25 question
I have an 8.25 rear axle with 27 spline axles. Can it be upgraded to a 29 spline? If so what all has to be changed?
I am running a D35 with a SYE at present. If I change to the 8.25 will the rear driveshaft work?
Thanks,Dave

To upgrade the 27 spline, I'm pretty sure you would need the new axle shafts and new carrier from a 29 spline. It might just be easier to go find one from a 97 or newer XJ at a junkyard. And you would need a new driveshaft to go with the new rear differential.
Edit: Didn't realize that you already had an SYE, so it's tough to say whether or not your current driveshaft will work.

drive shaft
The drive shaft wont work. It will be to long. But you can use a front drive shaft and it fits with the sye and your 8.25. The catch is you have to use the part of your old driveshaft that bolts to the sye and put it on the front drive shaft. I'll post some pix in a little while.

I swapped-in a 8.25 from a 2000 XJ into my 1992 and the driveshaft bolted-up and works fine, but I don't have a SYE. As was already mentioned, see if you can ditch the 27 spline and find a 29 spline at a junk yard - a lot less work.
The only thing that didn't match up was the parking brake cables. I have yet to do something with those and it's been over a year since I did the swap.

I did the same thing when i did my 8.25 swap i just cut the e-break cables off, i have an auto who needs the e break haha. I also just used stock DS and have not had problems, it actually pushed it back into the transfer a lil more since the pinion on the 8.25 is a lil longer than the D35. i have a 90 with 4.5 lift.

driveshaft
The part I am pointing to is the part I had to take off the rear to put on the front to make it work. As far as the e-brake cables I used the ones off my D35. I have a 4.5 RE with a SYE, Thats why the driveshaft I had was to long when I put in the 8.25

That is a good idea, Black. Definitely something to remember when getting a SYE eventually. Thanks!

I sure would like to say it was my own idea but I got it from This awesome CHEROKEEFORUM site. and to replace the front one I'll get it from the junkyard but I have to wait cuz my gears are different in the 8.25 than in the front.

when you buy a SYE you can get the complete kit, just tell them the transfer case and the rear axle they send everything in the kit. Well thats my understanding atleast haha

Thats a cool looking pic in the snow, but I am So happy I live in South East Tx. We get a 1/4'' every 5 years or something. For my front, I got one found with 4.10 gears but its 3hours away. Should be able to get it first part of June. Hopefully its is what the jy says it is.
