Default 8.25 and 35's?

Will the 8.25 stand up to 35' tires? I dont think so but I just thought I would ask. If not would the axle out of a chevy half ton be strong enough? I lost my lisence for six months so this winter I'm going to do alot of work with all the gas money I save! lol I plan on welding in some boatside rockers, painting the interior, painting the exterior, and if I can find all the right parts putting on a 5' lift to fit on the 35's!

I run that combo. On a 29 spline 8.25. Bent an axle shaft due to some wheel hop but I trust it.

Do you have a 27 or 29 spline 8.25? What year is your XJ?

The 27 spline shafts have a "neck down" at the end. AKA their shafts kind of taper off at the ends, making them quite weak. Because of this downfall, the 27 spline 8.25 is only equal to, or slightly stronger than the Dana 35.

The 29 spline shafts on the other hand were thicker and much stronger, but still have the "neck down". I would say you could run 35's tops on these stock shafts... Just be sure to re-gear.

As far as the D30 goes, it is a very stout axle. I have seen 37s run on them without any problems.

im at 5" and i think 35"s would be okay.. less flex, more bumpstop..

and yes a 29spline 8.25 will hold up.. modifications would not be required but highly suggested.

with 760x joints, tack weld the caps to the shafts, and the d30 will be just fine on 35"s

you could have 27 or 29. you have to pull a shaft and see witch one you have. 96 was the conversion year.

96 is a pivotal year for the 8.25. All records indicate that the 27 spline is the version used for that production year, but it has been verified that Chrysler ran out of 27s and started installing the 29s at some point during the 96 model year. Now no one knows the exact date that his happened so the "ONLY" way to tell for sure is to pull a shaft and count the splines.

My friend has been running 36s on his D30 for a while now. He wants to see how long it will hold up before going to a bigger axle. So far, it's been holding up fine on 36x13.50.

the problem is, the main upgrade is a waggy d44, and if done right the D30 is much stronger built, then a stock waggy d44. many guys run 37"s on a built d30..

alloy shafts/Good U joints will go along way
