Default 5 speed needs help!

Last week I noticed my clutch getting softer and the tranny getting harder to shift esp. into 1st from a dead stop. I added some clutch fluid helped a little, checked tranny fluid, all good. now shifting into reverse is impossible it is wound up or something (idk technical term) It just girnds really lound and high pitch as soon as i touch the reverge gear slot. I dont know much about transmissions, I havnt got around to messing with one yet, what would cause this? slave cylinder? Help a Jeep'er out??

did you just add clutch fluid or did you bleed your clutch?

I would bleed the clutch completely

Unless there is a failure you shouldn't have to add clutch fluid. If the clutch master, clutch slave or line is leaking it could be letting in air. Do you notice any leaks?

check on top of your fuse box for leaks as well (if it is leaking on the inside that is where the fluid will accumulate)

It only took about a tablespoon of fluid. how would I go about bleeding it?

Reverse is the only gear selection that actually meshes two (three in this case) together. If your clutch isn't disengaging enough, it will be the most difficult to select. Your focus is probably correct. Look for leaks.

I can't comment about bleeding as I've never had to do it on mine. Aren't these sealed assemblies? What year is your XJ?

there will be a bleed screw off of the slave cylinder.

and yours may be located inside the bell housing (I can remember what year they switched to external slave off the top of my head)

you loosen the screw and the cap and do the normal bleed process

also when is the last time you had a tranny flush? might be some time for some new fluid. you need GL-3 fluid as GL-4/5 will eat away the brass syncro's in the transmission (which may have happened if the non proper fluid as used)

Redline MT-90 is a great fluid to use, or napa sells a GL-3 "light-duty" fluid that you can do flushes with

thanks I'll take a look, and I knew about the fluid eating the syncro's. it might need some new stuff it's still redish. but I wasnt the one who changed it (if it has been) but the tranny was supposedly rebuilt and should only have about 40-50k on it

fluid in a manual tranny should not be red!! it is gear oil! if you have ATF in there that is HORRIBLE!

Many manual trans use ATF. Which is probably why they put it in there.... Hooray for assumptions...

Hope the right gear oil fixes the problem.
