Default 5 speed to auto

I just picked up a 95 xj 4x4 with a 5 speed tranny. I searched but only found info on people wanting to switch from auto to manual not vice versa. My question is what is involved in doing this and do you guys think it's worth it, or would it be easier yo just buy an auto? Thanks for your input.

buy an auto, they're everywhere
save the 5-speed for those that want it, they are getting harder to find

When I swapped from auto to 5 speed I swapped everything from the headlights to the t case. Wiring harnesses, dash, engine sensors, all of it. I bought a 98 parts jeep and swapped it all into my 97. It's a lot of work.

I was just curios if anyone had done this before. I guess I'll fix a few issues with it, drive it and then perhaps put it up for sale.

Why would you want that? I'd kill for a 5spd

I would sell it or see if anyone would trade with a little cash your way if you could.Around me 5 speeds sell for more then a auto but they are rarer also to.

Payed a $1000 premium for my 5 speed at a dealership which apparently only sold cherokees. (look it up ace motors in warrenton, va)

A long time ago I attempted to convert a BMW 318ti to a manual and found no matter how much I loved the thing it would be too much money and time, even out of a junkyard. Definitely buy an auto. But in all honesty get a chambered muffler and you will fall in love with the compression noise every time you disengage the clutch.

I did it. Depends how involved you want to get, if you want to shift it manually there is a lot less to swap then if you go for a complete swap. I swapped the whole kit and caboodle just to pull the plug on it and shift manually since I didn't like the way it shifted.

As far as selling or trading guess it depends what you have into yours and whether or not you can swap without a huge loss. If you are mechanically inclined and have the work space and tools to swap you should be able to sell the transmission and have this cost you very little.

Just curious, but why swap to auto if you wanted to shift manually?

I don't have much into it yet it's stock. I do need to fix a few problems it has like a bad freeze plug in the back of the block and pass smog. I just got this jeep so I guess I'll drive it then decide what to do with it. But after hearing most of the reaction to this thread I will not convert it. Instead I'll either keep it, trade or sell. Thank you for your thoughts.

Same thing with freeze plug happened to me. If I was you, I'd fix it immediately. Even if it's a small leak you could get unlucky like me and have it blow straight through, which cost me a new radiator and nearly a new head gasket. If you can get to it at all they have rubber expansion plugs that will do the job. Best of luck with it though, those things suck.

Gotta +1 what the other guys said. Autos are cheap and plentiful, sell the stick and keep it together if you can. If it's in good shape you can probably make a couple bucks off of it.

Quite frankly I hate manual transmissions for wheeling but don't like the way this auto reacts when wheeling so I swapped to the auto with the RAD shifter. I was planning on letting the transmission shift itself in town but really didn't like the way it shifted itself in town much either so I just use the RAD shifter all the time.
