4x4 wont engage

I have a 95 cherokee with the np231, i can hear the transfer case engage but the 4 wheel drive doesnt work. So its got to be something in the axle. Any ideas?

put in 2wd see if you can spin front shaft by hand try hard to turn it .

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

So putting it in 4hi with the tranny in neutral at a dead stop wont engage the 4x4? When at a dead stop i shift it into 4hi and i hear the transfer case engage but the 4 wheel doesnt work.

You gotta be moving and in gear to shift to 4 hi and rolling about 3mph in metrical to engage 4lo

How bad would it be to drive it on dry road for like 30 seconds in 4hi to see if it works? (i'll turn the wheel to see if it hops)
