4x4 wont engage?

4x4 wont engage?
have a 87 mj with a 4.0 ho and an aw4, last week 4x4 was engaging fine, now i out it in neutral, and literally the lever wont let me go into 4x4, it jjust slides back, but wont let me go to the 4hi or 4lo? im thinking the lever needs to be adjusted? thanks!

no it wont let me even go into it, i pull it back, but it wont let me go any further, and it was working fine last week, though, the other day i did accidentlly shift into reverse while driving, and the engine just died instanly, pulled over and all was normal, so dont think that matters.

Engine: 4.0L Renix Freshly Rebuilt!!
Sounds like linkage is shot. Take a look down by the T-Case on drivers side look for anything abnormal next to the frame and body.
