4x4 wheel drive sound
I own a Jeep Cherokee XJ 1995, 4 speed auto gearbox. Last night I've decide to test my part time 4 wheel drive. Put it on part time 4 wheel drive and i start driving, when I reached 10 mph a strange noise started. Sounds like grinding. I'm not sure where is it coming from, but I think its coming from the front dif, but I'm not sure. Then i decided to test the full time 4 wheel drive, same thing, same sound, same loudness, but something else happen, when i was turning left, the car was like struggling, the steering wheel became hard to turn. When I was reversing, the steering wheel started tu turn with a huge force to the left. same thing in low 4 wheel drive. When I drive it on rear wheel drive all is well, no sound no problem. Is that normal? What to check?[IMG]

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

first off, dont drive your jeep in part time 4wd on pavement, ever. The lurching while turning on pavement in part time is normal. It may do it a little in fulltime on dry pavement but shouldnt be as bad. You will tear your 4wd components apart if you drive it in part time on dry pavement.
as for the grinding, could e a few things. I would gess a streteched or worn chain, or an adjustment needed in the linkage if its popping out. It grinds alot and wont move when it pops out of gear.
Need a little more info maybe a video uploaded of the issue also.
