Before I bought my XJ, the Fairfax Co Jeep dealership that looked at the truck told me I "need a 4x4 service." They quoted $350. What's involved here? Is it something I can tackle myself?
Thanks

I would guess they were speaking of the Transfer Case service/check chain refill and both Differentials, drain, check for ware and refill. Didn't notice year on your XJ but hubs, seals is all I could think of what a 4x4 service would be.
Yes you can do all of these very easy and if you do a search here all are well documented.
Welcome to the site a great place to learn about all things XJ

Godknows what they mean with that, or would consider what would be involved in a "4x4 service" ....I would not even bother having that done.
Do all the stuff yourself, good practice anyway with any second hand vehicle that is now yours.

Wow, dealerships will do and say anything to get you to bring in your vehicle for over priced service.
Like above have said, the service is pretty straight forward. Drain the three lubricants (front and rear diff, and transfer case), fill them back up. Grease the suspension grease fittings, and check for wear on the moving parts. Very easy process, and you'll get a good feeling for what's going on under your Jeep.
