Default 4x4 Re-Break-in

I adopted my father-in-laws 96 XJ which happened to be be in fairly good condition but the one problem is that he never used his 4x4. What do you reccomend as far as getting it back useable status or should it be good to go?

If it were me I would change the fluid in the T-case being its 12 years old but that's just my opinion. It takes about a quart and a half of Dextron 3 at $4 a quart...Tj

Many XJ owners have complained about a clunking going IN and coming OUT of 4WD. This is usually because of lack of use by PO...or them.

If this occurs:
Step 1- Don't panic.
Step 2- Make sure you are not accelerating while engaging/disengaging.
Step 3- Continue to use 4WD off and on...the clunking will lessen.
Step 4- After clunking lessens...it will disappear....fixed.
Step 5- Revel in the no $$$ fix

Welcome to forum from NC, I'd give it an oil, trans, and t-case change. Probably wouldn't hurt to change the diff fluid and spark plugs to depending on how well it's been kept up.

it will NOT want to shift. youre gonna have to really fiddle with the lever and possibly shift in and of of drive a few times till it 'unsticks.'

Oh, and a little oil on the shift linkage underneath works wonders!
