Default 4x4 problems

I just got a new 93 xj and I put a new front drive shaft in because it didn't come with one so I went to try out the 4x4 the high range works but, low range won't lock in. It spins like it's in neutral. I have no idea why it would do that. Amy advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like either the shifter linkage or something is broken inside the transfer case. Which transfer case does it have?

I would start by checking to see if the linkage is bent and then go from there. There is a bushing on the linkage that can wear and come out of place which could cause the lever on the case to not move fully into position so check that as well.

It does pull all the way back its just not engaging. Both my full time and part time will it's just the low range that won't.

If you have 4 full time I dont think you have a NP231. What does the bezel say? Can you get a pic of the linkage?

probably need to adjust the linkage. That's where I'd start. Soak it down in penatrating oil and go at her with a 13mm to loosen the lock bolt. It's easier to do with a friend. You don't want to over adjust it and it sucks climbing up and down to see if it works.

I know on one of my 90"s the left engine mount is shot, and the engine sets almost an inch forward. (I need to pry it back when removing the E-fan). I suspect the reason (my 231) pop's out of 4 low sometimes is because of the works being shifted forward. You might just look and see that your drivers side mount looks centered. Mine you can see it's not. The engine is forward in the mount.

Btw my other 90 has the 242 Bezel but some PO put a 231 in it. That took a little figuring out when I got it. (there's a tag on the TC)

Nice video Jones. Well explained. Suppose a guy could bungee the lever back or something is there wasn't a helper. I'm not adjusting mine till my mount is fixed as it will turn out wrong when it's right.
