Default Winters here! and now I have a heat issue

Hey guys,

1999 cherokee.
-4F / -20C outside.

Had no problems last year getting heat out of my jeep. Matter of fact it would get so hot that I would have to turn it down after some driving. But this year it barely makes it to lukewarm.

- MY HEATER CORE IS FINE. It blew hot air before, and nothing has changed. I will flush it out one day, but something else has failed. Inlet heater hose is very hot, outlet hose is still hot but slightly cooler

- Coolant level is full and green colored. (no cracked heads or anything)
- If i turn the controls back to cold, it shifts over to cold no problem.
- Switches between defrost/foot/face no problemo
- 195 tstat, 2 years old.

- But it does ** Blow hot air on re-circ ** , which leads me to believe blend door issues.

I'm not finding much help online. Just everyone telling everyone to flush the core. So does anyone have any sort of way I can confirm my issue before I start tearing stuff apart? Its super cold here so i need to fix it asap!

Looked outside and I can see the blend door shaft turning back and forth as I change the heater controls. It does not make a definitive thump at the end but it seems to be getting a good amount of travel. So it's not seized. I'm at a loss!

Why would it work on recirculation but not on just regular settings?

You mean you can see the blend door motor from outside of the heater-box (it is located inside the cab, in the passenger footwell)

99+ XJ's have electric actuators, older XJ's have a cable that connects to the HVAC temperature selector.

I would be willing to bet that it is the blend door actuator if the heat does not seem to match the heater-core exhaust hose temperature.

yep! mine uses the electric actuator. I can see the shaft that the actuator turns (its on the bottom of the actuator), and it's turning a substantial amount without a hang up. But of course there's no way to see if the door itself is moving unless I opening it up.
