Default 4x4 problem

Here's my problem. Had 96 jeep Cherokee in full time last night. Switched it to 2 wheel drive light went off. 4 wheel drive didn't disengage though so I just parked it to deal with in the morning. Went to leave this morning and it was still on. Slowly rolled away but shifted into full time then back too 2 wheel drive. Then my part time light came on. No matter what selection I put the Cherokee in my 4x4 stays on. I've tried the reverse trick, throttle then hard stop, trying to disengage it in neutral. Nothing works. Could I have knocked off a vacuum line?

yeah im sure a vacuum line might be your problem. then again i dont know much about the 242 either. but i would deff check for the vacuum leaks as that will/could be the cheapest and easiest to repair.

Jeeps with the NP242 transfer case had no vacuum lines for engagement/disengagement.

Are all 4 of your tires the same size and have the same pressure?

I've had the best luck shifting the NP242 by driving under a load, releasing the throttle, pulling the lever to the desired position, and then tapping the throttle and releasing a time or two. Do this at a decent speed, like over 35 MPH.

Thanks guys. I fixed it by going 55 then putting it into 2 wheel. I'm gonna go underneath and grease up the linkages for extra measure
