Alright, alright. Your linkage from your shift lever to your transfer case is out of adjustment. Im thinking that its just off a bit, and If out of adjustment the vaccum motor wont send vaccum to the front axle(your vaccum disconnect version) to lock those two front axle shafts together. So you wont have 4x4. If not fully engaged in 4 wheel drive, your transfer case can be damaged, so you need to adjust the linkage to fully engage your transfer case.

but... the shift patern goes from neutral to 4LO. so if the linkage is out of adjustment it wouldnt be getting into gear at all. Thus causing the transfer case to go into neutral. Therefore the jeep would not move. At all

Check the vacuum line on the front axle, there is a rubber boot with two holes that fits onto the axle. Make sure it fits snugly then put a ziptie around it to hold it nice and tight. I bet that will fix your problem like magic
