4x4 or not?
Hey guys, first post. Gotta say, out of the cherokee sites i've looked through ya'll have probably one of the best. I searched around the forum for a similar topic or an answer but couldn't really find one. I've been underneath my automatic, 97 cherokee sport and it seems to have all the necessities for 4wd, the body says 4x4 on the back, but I have no controls (high/low 4wd shift *** or bottons) like I have on my CJ. My question is, did jeep make an AWD or computer controlled 4wd cause it seems like whenever i gun the accelerator the power goes to my rear axel. Any ideas or things to look for to see if the truck is actually 4x4 would be great. Thanks in advanced!

Could it be that it's a 4x4 and some one took off the shift levers and put in the different center consul. Shot my idea down if it's dumb just popped into my head

1. Does the stuff look like it's been there forever or just bolted in?
2. Go underneath and look for the linkage - cables, brackets, etc. Shine a flashlight up into the transmission tunnel and see whats to be seen.
It's got to be a console with a floor shift for the automatic trans. The transfer case shifter is right next to it on the left. If there is a hole in the trans tunnel and no shifter, maybe somebody had problems with it and removed it.
I've got an '87 Wrangler project that they DPO blew the motor in and installed a 305 SBC and TH350 with a driveshaft to the rear axle and eliminated the tcase because he could not find a TH350 out of a 4x4. People do weird stuff.
