Yes ZJs can have AWD, but they also stil have a T-case and shifter with AWD-N-4LO positions.
I'll def get some pictures up as soon as possible, unfortunately TN keeps getting hit with the mother, aunt, uncle and grandaddys of thunderstorms since yesterday so I'm going to have to wait out the rain . The stuff looks like it's been there for all 13 years or so. I ripped the carpet and headliner out of the jeep and near the consol there's a covered up hole to the left and right, so it's like that on each side. I'm very sure the PO didn't try and convert it because I purchased it not running for $400, he thought it had a blown piston rod, was a loose torque converter screw making the clunking and the battery line was bad, along with allot of little things like serpentine belt was too loose to turn the alternator to charge the battery. So, that to say, he obviously had no clue how to keep vehicle maintenance let alone do a convert. The 4x4 sticker is in the same position, like we are talking perfect position, as my friend's xj and it's the same sticker. I'm going to get on carfax and see if i can dig anything up on that, maybe a previous wreck and they decided to disabled it or put a new trans on the body or something, i dunno. anyways, thanks for the responses, I might be getting around by boat with all this flooding, but when it stops I'll put up some pics.
Thanks
Thanks
Sorry for took so long to get back to ya'll, works had me in CO for a few weeks.
So the verdict is, Jeepy McJeeperson was once a 4x4 manual until he received a salvage title, at which point he apparently relieved another XJ's tranny and such making him a 2x4. Makes me sad, but explains why there's a few random things down there. And for $400 bucks can't really complain. I guess next step is decide whether or not I want to keep it, having a 2wd kinda ruins hopes of offroading and such.

Ha, I'm as confused as hell about the whole thing as you are. Yes, there is a front dif and axel, but it doesn't seem to have a tcase. So they are just sitting there...doing nothing, which is what threw me off earlier; that and the XJ setup is a little different from my CJ.

well you like 80% to a 4x4 conversion then!!
and 2wd XJs HAVE a front axel..just no differential.. is there a pumpkin on the driver side of the axel? or just a bar from wheel to wheel??
