Without the front driveshaft you don't have 4WD. Driving with the transfer case in 4X4 with the front driveshaft removed will possibly damage it. Can't say I've ever tried it, why would you?

With no front shaft, theres no point in putting the transfer case in 4x4 unless you need the low range. Shouldnt hurt anything, I've done it quite a few times just for a 2wd low range. Why not just put a shaft in it though? You wont have 4 wheel drive with one shaft missing.

Yeah, what would be the point of selecting 4wd if there is no front driveshaft?

I knew a guy with a Rubicon 4 door and he bent his rear drive shaft and drove home in 4x4 like a front wheel drive.

We are currently in the woods and there's some bad mud on the way out and I dinged the front DS and it was making a terrible knocking noise but I feel like we will have to have the 4x4 to get out

Well if you take the shaft off you won't have 4x4.

So if you have to pull the DS just do it and stay in 2hi. You might make it out.

Most likely, you'll never notice a difference in mileage if you pull the shaft out. Maybe 1 mpg, if that even. Didnt make any difference in mileage on my truck.

Like they said, you're driving a 2WD Jeep if your front DS is pulled out. Doesn't matter what gear you put it in cause there's nothing to put power to your front tires.

But would it work for the rear wheels to just give me enough traction to get out

Yea just like in 2hi... 4 wheel drive only puts power to one wheel per axle unless you have lockers/lsd/posi.
