4x4 high in reverse

I tried to back up a very steep hill in my yard today I started to spin tires so I shifted into 4x4 high and gave the car gas in started to go back I needed more so i accelerated more and herd a loud grinding and the wheels would not spin so I shifted into 2wd and no noise and the wheels spun no noise and in 4 low I was able to back out but I can only give my jeep so much gas only in reverse and on this steep incline in 4 high or it starts to grind it is a 1998 Cherokee 231 tease thanks for the help

I found myself gasping for air by the end of that! Did you make sure the 4wd was engaged fully before flooring it up the hill? I assume since you said it was your yard, that the tires were able to slip?

i know that sometimes i need to shift to neutral to get it to engage because the trans is in a bind and puts stress on the t case so it wont let it engage

I had that happen to me when I was "testing" out my locker. I tried to climb a pretty steep hill in 2Hi, I got almost to the top, and started spinning the rears. I let off the go pedel and poped it into 4Hi but it wouldn't engage. I had to back down to get it to unload, from there it went in with no issue.
