Default 4x4 and front diff problems.

PO said my TC was "gone thru" and in 4x4 low and 4x4 hi part time the front 4x4 does not work at all, just rear wheels spin. In 4x4 full time it works great.

In 2x2 on pavement turning around slow and sharp it bucks like it is in 4x4.

Today I put on new wheels/tires and when I jacked up each front wheel one at a time I spin the tire and there is a loud click click click in the front diff which is suppose to have a locker.

Any help pls?

eather it could be your shifting actuator for the front collar or worse case your locker is bad or your burned it out but that depends on if you have a locker with or with out a clutch

Your avitar doesn't say what year you have, but you probably have a front axle disconnect that is not working. You need to verify it is getting vacuum from the transfer case switch. If it is, then it just needs a new vacuum motor.

My signature shows the year, 1990. How do I check this things you guys suggested and where are they? I have no idea what locker I have or if I even have one, going on what PO told me. Thanks.

Front axle disconnect is on the passenger side front axle tube. It has vacuum lines going to it.

That is possible. It sounds more like you have a rig that came with full time 4X4. So shift it into 4X4 and then jack up one front wheel. If it doesn't spin, then it works. As far as the clicking, that is your locker. Some of them do that when the springs in them wear out. If that is the case, you will want to replace them. But if you have full time 4X4, having a locker in is not a good idea because you will have it engaging all the time like you are getting. If you can put up with the bucking, then OK I guess. Or the best thing if you want to keep the locker is to change to a NP231 tcase and vacuum disconnect axle. I know that sounds like a lot, which is why I and some others never recommend putting a front locker in with full time 4X4

I know when in 2x2 the front wheels don't spin as I went off road yesterday in the mud and I know that 4x4 does not work in 4x4 low or 4x4 part time, only works in 4x4 part time according to what it says on the dash. I just brought home a 86 2 door parts rig, wonder what that has w/o walking out to look?

the vacuum disconnect was only on '84-'90 XJ's with the NP207 or 231 part-time t-cases, his NP242 full-time t-case wont have any vacuum lines....

i'm afraid it may be the guts of ur t-case are kinda ****ed up

Parts jeep has a vacuum thingie on the axle tube and mine has a vacuum line going to the front side of each wheel. So is there a vacuum controller on the TC and when its in 2x2 it disconnects at the wheels where the vacuum lines go?

We have had people say that before and find out later that yes they did have four wheel drive. Engage it, jack up one front wheel and see if it spins. If it doesn't, the 4X4 works.
