Default 4x4 doesnt work wheel drags

My jeeps 4 wheel drive doesnt work when i put it in 4x4 the left rear wheel just locks...it WONT ROTATE AT ALL just drags. 4H 4L doesnt matter even if i put it back in 2H it still drags it FREES THE WHEEL WHEN I PUT IT IN REVERSE IN 2H

What the hell is going on here?

The 4x4 and 4L lights dont light up when i go into 4 wheel either...i dont really know if im in 4 wheel because i cant move when i try 4 wheel because of the wheel locking up.

its an 89 Laredo

I6...AX15

4 wheel drive shifter reads 2H 4H N 4L theres no part time of full time option

edit:also speedometer doesnt work...and i bought the car with a new clutch hmmm

your speedo is cable driven, so either the cable is broken, disconected, or the gear in your transfercase is bad. you had a np 231 part time transfercase. it has 3 options...2wd hi 4wd hi and 4wd lo. 4wd hi on yours is part time meaning it is only for off road use, not for driving on the street. now your wheel locking thing is stranger then all hell, do both wheels lock or just the left rear one, can you go forward? does it ever happen in 2wd? or just 4wd?

it does it in 2wd when shifting back from 4wd...like i cant get out of 4 wheel until I shift into 2wd and go into reverse....but if i go into reverse it frees itself...resuming normal 2wd operation.....WTF?

I dont thing the 4wd in the t-case has anything to do with one tire locking up. Sounds mor like an e-brake or brake adjuster issue/

its weird because i reverse it and it frees the wheel...but it only works when i shift to 2H.

Could this be that im attempting to go into 4 wheel on the street with dry pavement? I'm going straight with it no turns just trying to figure out my issue.

That shouldn't matter..

This is a very strange issue. Sounds like something to do with the brakes to me also.. But its strange that it only happens after engaging the 4wd..

Have you done any work to the rear brakes recently?

It sounds like someone has replaced the axle assembly and did not get the right gear ratio in it. You will need to read the tags on the covers, or if you don't have them pull he covers and count the teeth and figure the ratios. If they don't match, you will have to replace one.

Its either that or your brake shoes on the wheel thats locking up. First thing you should do its jack up the side thats locking up, remove the wheel and the drum and make sure the brake pads and everything are installed right. If they're not you need to fix that. if thats ok you have axel ratios that don't match and using 4wd WILL break something eventually so you need to not use it till you get that fixed.
