Default 4x4 Bang

So i was messing around with my jeep today on a stretch of road and wanted to test the 4x4 so i shifted it and when i hit the gas it seems when it hit second gear theres a loud bang noise and then fine after once you get moving but everytime it shifts to second it bangs in 4 lo and 4 hi. I wasnt turning on the pavement just backed up and redid it again. What would cause this? 2wd its normal

If your Jeep has full- time four wheel drive you can drive on pavement, but if you are in part time high or low range four wheel drive driving on a solid surface you will put your front and rear axles in a major bind which could explain your banging noise.

i have something similar just right in first gear, i didnt look into this yet but my guess is a slipping chain in the transfer case but not 100% sure

- Marc

i read somewhere how to see if the chain is too stretched thats if its hitting the bottom of the transfercase, draining it and have a peek inside somehow

even just going straight? my tires arent uneven or anything and should all be spinning at the same speed. My gears are stock as well.

Going straight on pavement you shouldn't have any binding issues.

Yes, if you do not have full time four wheel drive there is no differential between the front and rear axles which causes what is called wind up. It sounds like the noise, and symptoms you described.

I have part-time 4wd and there's no bang when I put it in 4wd on straight pavement. Nor did I ever get a bang in my Dad's 94 or for the 15 years a PT only TJ was my DD.
They were/are all manual, so maybe it's an automatic thing.

Both our 4x4's are automatics. No bangs. Maybe it's t/c linkage issue?
