Default 4WD Speed??

The guy i bought my 2000 cherokee sport form said the part time 4wd was only good to drive under 40 mph. Is that true? what could happen to it?

Not true.

But most shouldnt need 4wd if your going fast.

I drive like a madman in the snow, though, so I have used it at a pretty high rate of speed

I had my wife's TJ doing 75-80 mph in the snow this past winter. Tcase took it like a champ, not a problem whatsoever.

I wouldnt shift into 4wd going more than 40-50 tho.

Any legal speed is fine as long as there is slick roadway. You can shift from 2wd to 4wd also at any legal speed. I've done it at 80 MPH more than once. Being a service manager at a Jeep dealership has it's bennies. You get to test new vehicles in the most fun conditions....

You can leave it in full-time 4WD on the newer Cherokees if you have that option when driving on dry, wet, snowy pavement. It's bad to drive on dry pavement in part time 4WD. In PT4WD the differentials lock and this is bad especially around corners.

Put it in FT4WD and turn slowly around a sharp corner then use PT4WD and you'll understand the binding deal.

Not quite true, the differentials are always open (unless you put lockers/have lockers in), however the transfer case locks, which can be damaged if driven on dry pavement.

I stand corrected. I have heard stories of transfer cases getting damaged when driving in PT4WD hi on dry pavement.

Ah hah ok. Not to hi jack thread, was curious cause I've done it at too fast a speed one time and heard the gears grind. Never wanted to hear that again

Here's how you shift from 2H to 4H and back again:

Let off gas, move shifter quickly, tap gas, let off and reapply gas..

Yea that's normally how I go about it, always thought above 30 was a no-no. I do love the on the fly shifting always helped during the winter.
