Default Center Console Replacement (Was: 4WD selector seems stuck)

While replacing my center console, I pulled up the 4WD selector towards 4LO/N/4HI area.
Now, it seems sort of stuck. I can still move it, but I just can't get it back all the way down to 2WD.
I just got this XJ and have never used 4WD. Does it not shift in and out of 4WD while parked?
But, will it be easier to push back into 2WD while I am actually driving it?
EDIT: I was able to move it back down. Not sure why it was stuck.

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

Put your trans in neutral and it will shift out of low. Regardless of what the factory says, best to be at a complete stop when switching to low range.

If you're sitting in your driveway without it running, shift the transmission into neutral, like stated above, you may have to gently rock it back and forth though because if there's any kind of slight pressure on the components, it may not allow the gears to disengage. That's why when I shift out of 4WD, I always drive a few feet in reverse to make sure that it goes back into 2WD. On all my other 4x4's (with locking hubs), this is how I've always done it (since @ 1985) to make sure that the 4WD disengages and goes back into 2WD (even though the Jeep FSM doesn't say anything about needing to do this).
My first XJ (a '92) always had trouble disengaging (especially on any kind of an incline) and I always had to do this to get it to disengage 4WD. Otherwise, it could be a few miles (and a few stop signs) before it would. I always chalked this up to slightly worn components in the TC, but it never hurt anything to make sure.
