I recently got an 91 XJ and am having problems with the 4WD. Although it shifts into 4H, the front wheels are not turning (only rear drive is working). If I manage to get it into 4L, the same thing happened plus there is a grinding noise when getting out of 4L (if it works at all). The previous owner said there was a small split in a pneumatic hose coming from the shifter to ? (front differential, maybe). Do you think this hose could be the problem and/or do you have any other recommendations?

 

That hose is prone to breaking. Change it out so you have the correct amount of vacuum to engage the axle.

I have found a diagram of this system. My XJ is from 91'. Is this the same as the 90'?
