4WD is New to Me: Question About 4-LO
Hey, I just got my XJ about 3 weeks ago and I Love it! its really fun to drive, but i just have one question. If I was to engage the 4-LO and drive it a bit then park it, turn it off then later come back with the 4-LO still engaged would that harm anything? Would i need to turn it off in Neutral or anything special?
Thanks ahead of time,
Boomer

No that wouldn't hurt anything, but ONLY use 4 wheel drive on SLIPPERY surfaces, like dirt, mud, snow, sand etc.
Never use it on dry road or it will cause binding and you will break something unless you have an np242 Tcase that offers the fulltime 4wheel drive option.
When I use 4wheel, I shift transmission to neutral, foot on brake, pull tcase to desired spot then shift trans to gear.
If 4 wheel will not dsiengage when you are done using it, I shift tranny to neutral, tcase to 2 wheel drive, transmission to reverse and drive in reverse about 5 feet or so and it usually disengages.
Others may do it different but this works for me =)
Hope that helps

Taking the tranny out of Lo range is typical once one returns to normal road surfaces - in Lo range, the wheels must be able to break traction independently to avoid damage to the mechanics of the the drivetrain.
If you're using it for low speed work, climbing, etc. on loose ground or unpaved surfaces you can leave it Lo range forever, I suppose. Why do you ask?
