This issue is not common and difficult to figure out how it works.
The dash lights for switch need 'ground' to illuminate. The plunger type indicator that screws into transfer case is what operates the lights by giving proper ground signal.
If all the lights are coming on, it would seem to be a ground issue. Chafed or broken wires perhaps. However, there are different switches for different years/transfer cases. Did the one you installed look identical and have the same number of wires?

Not ON the terminals, but around the perimeter of the connector.

I went to go look, I cannot locate the dash ground on my 1996 either. It's a mess of wires under there. Ground is not above the hood release and it's not attached to firewall or steering column bracket either.
I bet CCKen know where it hides..

Don't know for sure where it is on a ninety-sick, but the later versions of real XJ's had a ground, called G108, that was located near the headlamp switch and above the DLC, under the dash.

Why are you looking for this anyway. I think it's only the Realnuts XJ's that has this issue.
