Ok so my GF just got an 89 cherokee 4.0 I6 4wd. I own a 95 so im sure there are some slight differences. but when we were driving it yesterday we turned the wheels all the way to the left and looked for the "hop" same with the right and didnt get it. also the light on the dash never came on and the lever on the floor seems kind of i guess free moving. I jacked it up put it in 4high and was able to spin the front shaft same as in 2high. though it feels harder to spin when in 4high or low but never did it once spin the front wheels. any help would be very appreciative.

you should see a wiring pigtail going to the axle on the passenger side as well as 2 vacuum lines.

I would get the jeep up on jackstands and shift the TC into 4hi from underneath directly on the TC's shift lever
that would instantly rule out your linkage
if that doesnt fix it, then you might have TC problems.
On a non-vacuum dana30/np231, where is the switch for the 4x4 light?

you could have a worn bushing that let the linkage "slip" out
