Well, when talking about XJs, if you have a part time 4WD system, you have an NP231 Transfer case. You only want to shift it into 4Hi or 4LO when on a slick surface. If you have a full time 4WD system, you have an NP242 Transfer case. You have a differential of sorts built into your TC. You normally run it in 4HI on the road. The TC diff. keeps it from binding in turns. Then, this TC gives you the option of 4HI Lock and 4LO Lock, I believe.

Well, everybody has their own opinion on this subject but, personally think you have the better TC (NP231) Part Time transfer case. Runnning in 4HI on icey or snowy roads is perfectly fine. As soon as you get on dry definitely or even wet pavement, in my opinion, you should shift it back into 2HI.
