4wd
hello,
i am originally from greece but have lived in spain for the past few years.
i bought a 2001 cherokee sport 2.5td for a really cheap price.
its got 230,000 km (i know there are cylinder issues).
i have done a total of 3,000km cross-country travelling...there was some issues concerning leaks which have been solved.
today i decided to test the 4wd. the light goes on and
it seems to work well on the highway, the jeep feels more powerful, i can feel that there is traction in the front of the jeep, but when i stop at a curb and then turn the wheel to turn left, the front wheels go crazy...they spin and make me feel like i just went into a massive puddle. it sounds/feels like the wheels are in a ditch.
do you know what the problem could be?
the jeep handled fine on the motorway today around 120km per hour.
the problem is when its fully stopped and i turn 90 degrees.
regards

welcome to CF!
the 4wd is not designed for use on pavement, especially when making sharp turns.
you will break something very quickly.
hopefully you have the manual. give it a good reading.
it will describe the limits of your 4wd system.

thanks madmanmarty...no manual i am afraid...
i appreciate your help though...now it makes sense.
i drove it on a straight highway for 40km and put it back to normal when i heard the weird noise...won´t ever do it again!
btw what causes this limitation/noise?

when you turn the wheel, does it "bang" "clunk" ? When you say you stop at a curb and turn left, the "wheels go crazy and spin" ? Start by checking all your u-joints in the axles and the driveline.

The 242 transfer case has "full time" and " part time" potions on the shiftier bezel. Actually you can drive that on pavement in "full time", (I gather) The 231 has just "4 High" and "4 Low" and should about never be operated on something that's not slippery. Will bind front and rear drive-lines as they are locked at the TC, unlike the 242 which can let either spin, just like a rear differential out the axles to the wheels.
Look at the back of your sun visor, there might be info there.
