Default 4L but no 4H

Hey guys

My 96 XJ has 2H, 4L, but anytime i try putting it into 4H it screams at me. Very loud grinding, and it doesnt go anywhere.

Any idea what it could be or how to fix it?

Can you describe how you're shifting into 4H?

Shifting into 4H can be done at any speed. I put my clutch out but automatic owners should be able to let off the gas, shift, then tap the gas and presto 4H. 4L you must be at a slow crawl (1-3 MPH) to do.

Had the same problem last year on my 95 it was doing the same thing. Its the locking pin I believe there is a 3/8 bolt on the bottom of the transfer case you should be able to unscrew ir a spring and a pin should come out. I was missing my pin. I put a new pin in and flushed the fluid.. to this day it is still working
