4FT>4PT>2WD switching wierdness
I generally don't like to drive in Full-Time, but with the snow and all I had it in Full-Time this weekend, but this morning the roads were fine so I went to switch back to 2 wheel drive and the Part Time light stayed on . . . it felt like it was in 2WD but I couldn't be sure
the PT light eventually went out before I got on the highway and the drive felt fine
could this be a result of rust or cold weather? I don't want to accidentally destroy my transfer case because it failed to switch out of PT . . .
would it be better to leave it in Full Time?
will I get better mileage in 2WD?

The delay can be many things. The cold can cause it cause alot of the T-cases indicate teh dash lights by use of a vacum switch..

Depends, Full time will give you better handling in turns, but only if you are accelerating through them
Yes you will get better mileage in 2WD
