Anyone have any Ideas on why my steering has about a 4 inch play either direction before it responds?

Go to a JY and pull one from a Dodge Durango it is a good upgrade and almost a direct bolt in.

There is a thread on here where someone did the swap and I am sure you can find it with a lil search.

I agree with the others, Steering box will probably give you the biggest bang for the buck. This is where I would start. Based on your profile if you're driving a 1990, I would also be prepared to replace every steering component.
