your going backwards with the 4.2, less power and carbureted unless you buy the conversion.
and yes you asked but were wondering why you would want to do that? i mean why dont you make your xj 2wd while your at it?

It has the conversion from mopar for the fuel injection on it,its a rollover jeep plus I can have it for zip,I have an old xj out back that has no engine in it I am just looking to see if a majority of things can be slapped together for a time waster for me thanks.( I asked a question I know it would be a down grade if it had a carb I don't mind the serious people when I get more ? but the ones just being an IDIOT to try to show a person up which backfires most of the time showing what an IDIOT they are is most boring because it happens so much, so if you cant be helpful sit in back of the bus where you belong)

1971-1990 258 "High Torque": 150hp@ 3,800Rpm 240lb-ft @ 1,800Rpm
4.0ltr "Power Tech": 190hp @ 4,600 RPM 225lb-ft @ 3,200 RPM.
Though it has more HP..slightly.. is has less torque. How often do you get your XJ in the 4K+ RPM range? I would rather have more torque down low, where a Jeep needs it than so high in the RPM that I never get to it. With the fuel injection it would only be that much better.
This is all just personal opinion though...

The AMC 4.2 is a very capable engine an its proven! power numbers can equal an surpass the 4.0, to each there own! now if you plan to go this route know the carter carburetor sucks big time don't waste any time with it just spend the money for a weber an never look back. if you go this route an have a 258 Google nutter bypass this will also get you on your way also if it comes attached to a manual transmission look out for the two piece case peugeot ba10

if i were gonna run a 4.2 i would skip the crappy carbs and go straight for the propane. you will not find a carb that will keep you running in all situations

True but the weber is hard to beat if you know how to tune a carb. an i dont plan to find my self running upside down nor verticle any time soon, bad on the seals you know.
