I've heard 4.0's way worse than that is and the owners have been driving them for tens of thousands of miles that way with no issues or change. I would just run it. But if she's apart already, I'd be digging in and giving her some fresh parts. Everyone's situation is different though.

If you are new to XJs, make sure your cooling system is in top shape - New or Newer radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostat, flushed and clean system with right amount of antifreeze.
I forgot to include the fan clutch and auxiliary fan - make sure they work as they are supposed to.
Overheating XJs are a common issue because of lack of maintenance. Sure way to kill an engine.

Took it wheeling in some hot weather and it coped pretty well, so fingers crossed I've ticked that box.

If it ain't broke...
My Cherokee is REALLY noisy. 1992 with 114k miles. 10k miles ago, my plan was to drive it until it croaked then replace the engine. Then I fell in Jeep love with it - quit over analyzing things - and started paying attention.
Oil sensor thing - well it turned out to be most the oil leak, so replaced it.
Changed the oil a few times in a row, and it got quieter.
Found water leaks - dang heater quad/valve thing is horrible - pin hole in a hose - fixed.
Stopped accepting that when it worked hard it should get hot - replaced fan clutch and water pump - now it sits at 190 - notmatter what.
Changed out trans fluid twice - ATF+4 [probably wrong] but it just started shifting better.
Started running that Lucas stuff in the gas.
Bottom line - I second the comment about REALLY watching the cooling system. Also, I've see a lot of Cherokee's where people have confused "bullet proof" with "don't take care of it" - Mine runs better at 214k than it did at 204k, smoother, shifts better, and never leaves a drop on the driveway.
No way I'm pulling a head off mine unless I'm prepared to long block it at this mileage. Also, the last time I dropped into 4L and drove my impossibly stock cherokee past the 40K Rubicons trying not to scratch paint or bend a $300 wheel - I crushed my muffler....
...that crushed muffler ruptured on the drive home. It makes a soothing noise now the covers any 'tapping'. So if your noisy engines bothers you, just take a claw hammer to your muffler until you find a HUM you like.
