My oil guage had been pegged to the far right for quite some time. I went to the junk yard and found the same instrument cluster as the one I have, and swapped out the guage. When I started it up the guage went straight to the far right hand side. I know for a fact that the actual oil pressure is fine. Could it be the oil pressure sending unit?

most likely the sender. pull the harness from the back of it and see if theres oil on it. if there is, the sender is bad.

 

That would be my guess, as my old YJ did the same thing, and so did a friend's XJ. Quick, cheap, easy fix.

 

There's an idiot light sending unit and a gauge sending unit. If you have the sending unit for the idiot light, it'll throw the gauge all the way over. As luck would have it, the gauge sending unit runs about $20.00 more if I remember correctly.

 

$24.00 or something like that....First oil change I did on the XJ (not use to it having the oil pressure sender right above the oil filter as no other vehicle I worked on had it there if I remember correctly) anyways, got the filter wrench around it, not looking and pulled and heard a snap. So....$24.00 and 10 minutes later, I had a working oil pressure gauge again.
