Have you tried running some seafoam through it yet?

http://www.seafoamsales.com/motorTuneUp.htm

Many use it and claim it works wonders, that said I have never used it myself.

I would try that before anything, many people have good success with that particular product.

Ive done similar...

But I drain the oil, screw on an El-cheap filter... Pour in a gallon of diesel. Run it 15 minutes, drain it, put on a good filter, refill with good oil... Works like a champ...

I have also done this with a combo of 2qts kerosene to 4 qts of 30 wt oil. Run for 15 mins at idle then drain and change to straight 30 wt for another 15 mins. Drain and put whatever you want to end up with for oil and filter.

Did this on a flathead plymouth and then drove it from Chicago to Maryland. Great car. They just don't make cars like that any more.

Fram is an excellent filter for this purpose but the store brands are usually cheaper and do as well as a Fram. The diesel/kerosene flush always works but if your engine was on it's last legs then it will knock those legs out from under it. So be aware!!!! But it will be cleaned out when you do the rebuild. Have to look for the silver lining to every dark cloud.

Did it on my first Renix era Jeep an '89 and it had 248,000 showing and the odometer didn't work any longer. About 6 months after the flush I started getting lower oil pressure at idle down to less than 5 pounds. Tore the engine down and built a stroker that went into a buddies CJ7 that was a good engine but the diminished oil pressure was a concern. But with the stroker build we changed cranks anyway, so no big deal. Only took ten over bearings anyways. When I left Georgia that Renix was still tearing up the hunting lease in that CJ7. So that is my only disclaimer experience/

I guess when I think about it, diesel is really is a solvent. Shouldn`t be any reason why that wouldn`t work. Matter of fact, I like that idea.
and you are right blue,, I had an old valient with a slant 6,, tried to blow it up on the freeway once,, valves just started floating till the rpms came down a little.
