I've owned my Jeep since it was new when gas was below a buck and have driven it over 225,000 miles. I consistently got 19 mpg on the highway. I never checked it in town. I couldn't bear to know.
On one trip to Camp Jeep 2001, I cruised for a long period at 45 mph, and I figured over 22 mpg. But that was one time, and you must calculate fuel economy over many tank fulls. And I wouldn't drive 45 on the interstate for long periods at any price.
The Jeep is no longer my daily driver, and I've raised it 2'' and just put on 31" Goodrich ATs. I'll be taking it on a highway trip next weekend, and I'll check my current gas mileage. I have all expectations that it has suffered severely from the modifications. But as far as I'm concerned, "Damn the mileage; full four-wheel-drive ahead!"
From empirical evidence, people often seem not to care about fuel economy until they're at the gas pump. Proper driving habits and vehicle maintenance are essential.

I get like 10mpg.
Now that i'm broke it's a big concern... I've had lots of money lately and bought lots of stuff for my Jeep but now that I'm broke I need to get this fixed with the next paycheck.
I get 2200 RPMs at 45mph.
My overdrive isn't kicking in, no clue what that even is but all my friends that are mechanics told me that.
They told me it might be a sensor or something so...
What would make this happen?
I think this is the reason i'm getting **** gas milage.
I'm on 33x12.5s and a 4.5" lift, so I assumed i should atleast get 15mpg?

These things are only rated for 15 city and 20 Highway. So after a lift and larger tires a few miles per gallon is the price you pay to have a lift and larger tires. If you wanted to get 20+ mpg then run so ricer donuts and call it a day.

At this point my speedo is off 20 miles for every 100 it shows. Meaning when my trip odom shows I have gone 100 miles, actual is I have gone 120. When my heep was on 30" tires I would average 17.6mpg with all city driving. Now on 31's I see 16.8mpg.
When I first bought the XJ, about ten months ago, I spent my money fixing the problems and performing required maintance. That should be always be done before dumping money into a lift and tires.

everyone with bigger tires needs to realize with every rotation of the wheel you are moving faster or father that what your speedo or odometer is reading. unless you have re calibrated you gauges. For someone like the OP who is running 33x12.5 15 but your stock was lets say 215/75r15 Your gauges will be off by almost 20% so if your gettin say 10mpg, you're really gettin 12. Now I know some of you will say thats only 2mpg different, but when you get up to high speeds, like driving on the freeway. 20% is huge if your speedo says 65 you're really going 78. now the fact that your overdrive isn't kicking in could come into effect. changing gears would also help, your engine is workin overtime
sorry but it just drives me nuts when people say things like "I used to get 17 mpg but then I lifted (decreases aerodynamics) and increased tires (increases strain) and now I only get 14 mpg..." YOU ARE GETTING MORE THAN 14MPG... DO THE MATH. you can't expect to make mods to body/suspension and not see a difference in performance.... Just my 2 cents
didnt mean to hurt anyones feel goods by saying that

Figuring MPG not off gauges, but what I put in to empty. I average 15-16mpg in-town and 18-20mpg on free way and that's with 3.55 gears auto on 31's with 5" lift...

This is kind of like my 71 F100 460/c6 with 3.25 gears on 31-1.50-15's Small 4v, alum. intake, headers, small cam etc. Gobs of torque and lots of fun. I swapped it all in after messing arounf with a 351w and automatic overdrive. I couldn't get more than about 13 mpg on the 351w. Figured I was going to get big block gas mileage I might as well have a big block right? lol
I get around 15 mpg with the 460.
I don't see why you can't have your cake and eat it too. I know I'll never get 18-19 in my F100 or 19-20 in my 90 Cherokee but with the right tuning on the F100 I might get to16-17 in my F100 and 17-18 in the Jeep.
Just because it is a Cherokee does not mean that you have to get 12mpg.
Use the right timing curve on an old Ford and that helps a lot.
I still have a lot to learn about the Jeeps but I will learn it
I'll learn it and put it to use on mine to get the best performance and economy I can out of my little 4.0.
