Question 33's on stock gears?

can i put 33's on with stock gears? i know it will slow it down, but will the gears and axles hold up? i'm so used to building diesels and i never have to change gears in them. motor is stock on jeep. what do you think, has anyone tried it?

I don't see why not as long as your rear end can handle them...You won't have as mich torque, mpg will go down and performance will decrease but as long as it's the newer 8.25 or something it'll hold em without breaking..

What is your stock ratio?

I have 33's on my Jeep with a D-35 and 3.55's. It's so slow, that the elderly flip me off... Torque??? Plenty.... it's a 4-liter. MPG... its my wheeling Jeep Feet per gallon, or gallons per hour would be a better measure.

I’m running 33” with 3.55 gears and an AW4. My mileage dropped to 14.5mpg in the city and 18mpg on the highway. The 4.0L still has plenty of torque to play on the rocks and it will get this beast cooking along at 75mph. That being said, I will still be regearing to 4.27 when I get some spare cash.

Many people argue that 33's are the limit for stock gears, if you run them be prepared to have a pretty significant loss of MPG and power. But it can be done.

Its plenty doable, ive been on stock gears with 33s for about a month now, but the 4.56s are going in a week or so. your mpg is gonna go down a bit, but not much unless you try to compensate for your lack of acceleration by hitting the skinny pedal harder. dont bother shifting past 3 either. OD just bogs the motor down.

its slow, but not horrid. i have just about every bolt-on made for the 4.0 and i can still chirp my tires at a streetlight, and light em up good around a turn.

i'm on 33's with 3.55s and an aw4 as well. its not as bad as you would think and was my DD for awhile. it is very livable. mpg went down drastically in mine but i think its more due to the motor getting old and tired (264k miles) now my trail rig only though and will be getting 4.56 and 35's in the next month or so

i am getting about 13mpg city. though i beat on it and it has a ton of miles. it will get better when regeared.

as for your rear axle you either have

chrysler 8.25

or dana 35

yours being a 97 if it has an 8.25 it will be 29 spline which is a decent axle. much better than the dana 35.

also stock gears are 3.55 in an automatic and 3.07 with a manual trans assuming you have the 4.0 6cyl

4.27s are very real just not an option for reverse spiral(hp)
33 inch tires and a stock geared standard shift(3.07) is gutless as...... well it's bad but an AW4 (3.55) is OK for all but the big rock gardens

You can do it. The question is, wil you be able to live with it? It WILL be a lot slower, IMHO!! Mine was horrible!! Now with 4.88s and 33s, it's KILLER!!
